Turkey is a much diversified country in terms of its culture. It has some remnants from the Ottoman Empire and European and Islam traditions. The modernization of the country was due in large part to Mustafa Kemel Ataturk . He took a religion ridden Ottoman Empire and turned Turkey into a modern nation state with a very clear and concise rule for separation of state and religion. After the separation was enacted the country saw an increase in the methods of artistic expression.
During the first few years of the new republic, the government had invested a large amount of the country’s resources into the arts, such as paintings, sculpture and architecture. The reasons for this invested were to promote modernization and also to create a cultural identity among the world countries. There were many different historical players involved in the role if identifying a Turkish society. The culture here in Turkey has a combination of modern efforts to be western and a desire to hold onto the traditional religious and historical values.
The music of Turkey has elements of Central Asian folk music, Arabic and Perisan style classical music, ancient Greco-Roman music and modern day European and American popular music. The country has its own deep musical heritage has developed music into two areas, the Turkish Classical and the Turkish Folk. There are of course other genres such as pop; the biggest pop star to come from Turkey is Sezen Aksu. Pop music has a huge mainstream following since 1960. There are also underground genres that are not played on the radio but in clubs and on the street they are dance music, rap, hip hop and electronic.
The classical Turkish architecture is most famous in the Mosques. The Blue Mosque and the Suleiman Mosque are key examples of two of the most beautiful and most recognized structures in Turkey. You can see the evolution in architecture as you walk around the towns and visit different cities. Literature of Turkey goes back to poetry and prose. Those are from classical forms of literature that survived the Ottoman Empire. They do have other styles of books in Turkey but the classic literature just like in any country is fine works of art that just become more appreciated as time goes on.
The food in Turkey is a huge part of their culture. The chefs in Turkey use the best blends of ingredients and recipes that were inherited from other places that were once covered by the Ottoman Empire. The main style of cuisine in Turkey is Turkic and Central Asian. The food is typically sauced dishes that are made with cereals, different vegetables and some mainly, mainly lamb. There are soups and cold dishes that are cooked with olive oil and then there are the delicious pastry dishes. The country of Turkey is very rich in history as it is in culture.
