The population in Turkey according to a Census was estimated at 72.6 billion people and the annual growth rate is estimated at 15 percent. This is population for people who live or work there, it does not account for the vacations that come every year from all over the world. The population when broken down is described as young, 25.5 percent of the population are about 0-15 years of age. The life expectancy of a man in Turkey is 68 years and 73 for women.

As far as education goes, it is compulsory and free for ages between 6 and 15. The literacy rate in the country is 95 percent for men and 79 percent for women. The number for women is low due in part of the attitudes the country’s men have with women.

The country has a Constitution and they define a Turk as someone who is “bound to the Turkish state through the bond of citizenship”. As far as the country is concerned the legal definition which we just gave you and an ethnic definition. If you have a person whose parents were born in Turkey and have a child that was not and the family lives in another country, then the parents would be called Turks because they were born there and have citizenship, but the child would not be a Turk because the child was born somewhere else.

There is some ethnicity in Turkey, the population mainly consists of Turkish ethnicity but the other groups would be comprised of Kurds, Roma, Arabs and the Cicassians. In the country of Turkey there are only three recognized minorities, the Greeks, Jews and Armenians. The largest non Turkish ethic group would be the Kurds and they stay pretty much together in the southeast part of the country. The minorities that we listed do not have any special privileges. But they recognize the word minority as something in a sensitive problem.

Turkish is the official language of the country. This language is the only language the country will recognize, but on broadcast programs for few hours per week, the stations will allow Arabic, Bosnian, Circassian and Kurdish dialects to be broadcasts. The religion of Turkey is that 99 percent of the country is Muslims. The majority of the Muslims are the Sunni branch of Islam. A large minority population is connected to Alevi sect. Other beliefs in Turkey account for Christian denominations such as Greek Orthodox, Armenian Apolostolic and Syriac Orthodox. Judaism, Yezidism and Atheism are among other beliefs.

The state of Turkey does not recognize any official religion and it does not endorse any either, it is monitored from all sections of the country to make sure no one is doing something to another religious group. The Turkish Constitution does allow for freedom of religion for groups and individuals who are protected within the state. They are not allowed to be involved as a religious group in any political process.
