Education in Turkey states those 8 years of primary school between the ages of 6 and 14 for all students is mandatory. Education does not seem to be mandatory but the amount of time should you go is. Some areas in Turkey have a great turn out rate and in other locations there is not. After the 8 mandatory in primary school is 3 or more years of secondary education is not only available for public school but for open and vocational high schools. The high school dropout rate in Turkey has been compared with other Western countries.
Statistically, over the years 1,273 higher learning institutions were in operation, except of the Open University. This worked as a faculty of Anadolu University; they have an entrance exam that is recognized at a national level, the OSS, assigns the students who do well here to the very limited space that is available in the Universities. The student’s performance of this test and the prospective department that are available in the University will also determine entry.
Children when they become 6 years old, their parents have the option to send them to kindergartens either public or private. The Private schools have fees so they are not free and the public schools cannot accommodate every 6 year old. There is an increase in the number of public kindergartens due in part of reconstructing the Turkish Education System.
The elementary schools have an 8 year educational program for child of the ages 7 and 15. The basic course of study is the Turkish Language, mathematics, Sciences, Social Sciences, Art, Music, Physical Education, Handicraft and a foreign language such as English, French or German. There are two types of elementary school the public and the private. The public school is free and the state does provide them. At the end of the 8th year students take an exam called the OKS, it lasts for 2 hours and has 100 questions. It is a test that tests the student’s abilities in Turkish, Math, natural Science and Social Sciences they learned in elementary school. All depending on their test, they are routed to the right high school.
Once a student is assigned a high school is will last 4 years plus 1 year of English Prep Classes. The different types of High schools are Public, the Anatolian High School, this type of school teaches additional skills in a foreign language. There are Science High Schools that obviously focus on Science education. The Vocational High School, Tourism Vocational High School, Industrial Vocational High School and Electrical Vocational High School. The last two are Imam-Hatip High Schools they are a religious type of high school and the Private High Schools.
The subjects they are teaching to 9th and 10th graders are Turkish Language and Literature, math, Physics, Biology. Chemistry, Geometry, Geography, English, Turkish History, Health Studies and national Security. These are the subjects taught in the standard High School.
