A few people when they hear the country of Turkey, they think of a small country with very limited resources. But that is not how the country is, Turkey is a fully function country with everything all other countries do. Turkey is actually one of the world’s top 20 economic countries plus they have a massive amount of tourism there. Turkey also has key military forces. The Turkish Armed Forces like here in the United States has 3 branches, the Army, Navy and the Air Forces. Unlike the United States where there is also another branch, the Marines. The Gendarmerie and the Coast Guard work as components of the Ministry of Internal Affairs when the country is in peacetime. When they are in war mode they report to the Army and the Naval Commands. They acquire both internal law and military functions when the country is in crisis.

The President of Turkey appoints the Chief of the General Staff and he in turn is responsible to the Prime Minister. As for matters that deal with National Security, the Council of Ministers is responsible to parliament. They are also responsible for preparation of the Armed Forces that are ready to fight for their country. Parliament is in charge of handling the authority to declare war on another country. They also are the ones who give the authority to enter another country based on a conflict.

The Turkish Armed Forces is currently the second largest standing military unit in NATO only second to the United States Armed Forces, they have in combination with all of the U.S branches of the military have 1,043, 550 uniformed personal serving the all branches of the Armed Forces. All males must serve in the armed forces for a period of one to fifteen months and the male’s education and job location will determine how long they stay. If you are a gay male you are required to serve but in Turkey, they have the right to be exempt if they request to.

With Turkey’s participation in the Korean War, the country has fully maintained armed forces in international missions for NATO since 1950. This includes peacekeeping missions as well. They also participated in missions in the former country called Yugoslavia plus it has sent trooped to support coalition forces in the First Gulf War. Turkey has an estimated 36,000 troops in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and they even deployed troops to Afghanistan as a part of the United States stabilization forces and the UN-authorized NATO commanded International Security Assistance Force since 2001.

Last year in 2006, the Turkish Parliament had sent troops for a peacekeeping force of Navy patrol ships and an additional 700 ground troops as part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon during the Israeli- Lebanon conflict. Turkey indeed has a very strong military and there presence is strong, they are only second to the United States in numbers. Turkey is not just a small country but in time of conflict they are a force to be reckoned with.
